Eine kulturhistorische Geschichte

„And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.“

This is how the Gospel of Luke describes the opening scene of the Christmas story, and in the following sentences, other protagonists appear: the shepherds with their flock and an angel who descended from heaven to proclaim the joy of the Saviour's birth.
In den nachfolgenden Jahrhunderten wurde die Weihnachtsgeschichte in Mosaiken, Fresken und Gemälden dargestellt, wirkliche Krippen, umringt von dem uns bekannten Personal gab es jedoch nicht vor dem hohen Mittelalter. Es soll Franziskus von Assisi gewesen sein, der 1223 in einem kleinen Ort nördlich von Rom als Erster eine lebendige Krippe mitsamt Schafen, Ochs und Esel inszeniert hatte. Für die Menschen jener Zeit, die meist nicht lesen konnten, muss diese anschauliche Darstellung der Weihnachtsgeschichte ein umwerfendes und berührendes Ereignis gewesen sein.
