Pop Up Herrnhut

Before it starts

When the first trees were felled near Berthelsdorf in June 1722, Upper Lusatia not only gained a new village, but a religious community developed here whose teachings would soon spread across the world.

Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf had allowed some descendants of the Bohemian Brethren, who had fled Moravia to escape the Counter-Reformation, to settle on his estate. The Count, a devout Pietist and social reformer, had wanted to become a missionary himself. So he founded with his protégés the Moravian Brethren in 1727 and soon afterwards settlements in Europe and overseas, for which the new village was the religious centre and an architectural model.
